There were times where I could almost imagine the author sitting there with an academic article listing the problems homeless kids face and checking them off as he methodically depicted them in the story.This felt like a bit of a throwback to me — like one of those "problem" novels that I remember being assigned in school, kind of the book version of an after-school special.
